Born on Valentine's Day, William was the third child and first son of William Edward and Isabella Rumbold Tranter. His given name Thomas was likely an homage to his grandfathers, Thomas Rumbold and Thomas Tranter; however, most of his life, he was called William Edward after his father, who died when William was a toddler. Isabella was described as a widow on the 1880 Federal Census, when William Jr was just 3 years old, and on the 1892 NY State Census as well as on various Brooklyn Directory listings beginning in 1879/80. His mother struggled to support the family as a grocer and a dressmaker, perhaps among various occupations, and William surely must have felt the need to become the man of the family.

Nonetheless, William married Agnes C Dixon shortly before his 21st birthday on 7 Nov 1897. The couple lived for many years in Manhattan (1900 Federal Census, 1905 NY State Census, and 1910 Federal Census) where William plied his trade as a painter and opened a retail hardware store.

Before moving to New Jersey, the couple added two daughters to their family: Leslie A (1912) and Isabelle (1914). William was in his mid-thirties by this time but moved his family and business to Hackensack, where the family appears on the 1920, 1930, and 1940 census records.

He died on Sunday, 20 April 1952, and was buried on Wednesday, 23 April, leaving behind his wife and daughters.
