Actor. He is best remembered for his recurring portrayal of the enthusiastic Captain Video on the television series "Captain Video and His Video Rangers". After attaining his degree in theatrical arts from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, New York, he began his career on the stage appearing as a leading man in such productions as "Alice in Arms," "Skipper Next to God," "Strange Bedfellows," "Diamond Lil," and "The Rainmaker". After being discovered by producer Allen B. DuMont during a dinner party at Ciro's, he was so impressed by his blonde good looks, slim physique, and professionalism, that he arranged for him to begin a career in the television industry. From there, he would go on to flourish as a prominent character actor appearing in over 30 features, often typecast as husbands, fathers, doctors, politicians, retail clerks, businessmen, love interests, sidekicks, cowboys, sheriffs, neighbors, jurors, detectives, reporters, soldiers, clergymen, and heroes. He appeared in numerous guest spots on such syndicated sitcoms as "Robert Montgomery Presents," "Suspense," "The Philico Television Playhouse," "Eye Witness," "Martin Kane," "The Mask," "The Motorola Television Hour," "Love of Life," "The Californians," "Harbormaster," "Modern Romances," "Wichita Town," "Johnny Midnight," "Bronco," "Sugarfoot," "77 Sunset Strip," "Cheyenne," "The Clear Horizon," "Stagecoach West," "The Loretta Young Show," "Surfside 6," "Bonanza," "Perry Mason," "Laramie," and "Outlaws". He appeared in leading roles in such motion pictures as "Girl on the Run" (1953), "Three Hours to Kill" (1954), "The Revolt of Mamie Stover" (1956), and "Vice Raid" (1959). During his career, he was a member of the Screen Actors Guild, was supportive of the Motion Picture and Television Fund, had been a regular parishioner of the Catholic church, was supportive of the California State Democratic Committee, had been a chairman for his local charters of the American Red Cross and St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, was a theatrical instructor for the Pasadena Playhouse, and he was the founder of the children's organization "Coogan's Kids". In 1963, Coogan, who never married but fathered one child, announced his retirement for acting and would go on to spend the remainder of his life being a regular attendee at autograph conventions, was a generous benefactor for several schools and libraries, divided time between his homes in Los Angeles, California and Long Island, New York, and was often seen partaking in various recreational activities at the prestigious Los Angeles Country Club until his death from the complications of advanced age.
