Joseph Thomas Huzar was born in Poland and was the son of Nick and Stella Huzar. He and his family immigrated to St. Louis in 1949. Joe served in the U.S. Navy and Merchant Marines in the late 1950's and mid 60's. He finally settled in Muscle Shoals in 1977. For over 30 years, Joe worked the rivers in eastern America with the largest portion of his service on the great Mississippi. He began his towboat career as a deckhand, but he quickly evolved into a skilled riverboat captain. He piloted some of the largest towboats on the Mississippi. During his off-duty days, "Cap'n Joe" enjoyed a social atmosphere and was an active member of the B.P.O.E. 820 and Moose Lodge 2034 in Florence Alabama.
A loving father and a devoted grandfather, Captain Joe was a good friend to the many who knew him.
