Josiah was born between 1753-57. The first tax record for Josiah is in the 10 Jun 1773 Tithables. It shows Dorothy Curling widow and son Josiah. This was the year after his father's death in 1772. The same entry is seen in the 1774 tithables. Males are first seen on tithables when they are 16+ years of age. If Josiah was 21 in 1773 or 1774 he should have been listed by himself.

Josiah's death date is unknown. Josiah is last seen in a court record in court case on 24 Jul 1820 in Bertie County, NC.

Josiah was one of 9 children of Anthony Curling Jr. and his wife Dorothy Sikes.

Josiah's siblings were:

1. Labin
2. Henry, married a Dorathy
3. Mary
4. Barbary
5. Frances
6. Martha, married Henry Gammon
7. Lydia, married Benjamin Miller
8. Keziah, married Cary Sikes

No records of the above children's birth or death dates have been found.

In 1771 before Josiah was 21 he is mentioned in his father's will. By 1782 Josiah owned property in St Brides Parish, Norfolk County.

The 1790 Camden County, NC Census shows a Josiah Curling (family of 6). The 1810 Currituck County census shows Josiah (family of 7).

On Dec 30, 1793 Josiah buys 60 acres on Powells Point, Currituck County, NC. There are several other Currituck land transactions through 1801. On Sept 3, 1801 Josiah was one of a group of people, "appointed Patterollers for Powells Point district..."

Josiah was the husband of Mary Duke. They were married before 19 Sep 1782 when a daughter Mary was born. No record of their marriage can be found.

Josiah and Mary had 5 children, 2 boys and 3 girls. The only known name of any of the children was Mary Curling, (she married Caleb Forbes).

As the family lived in Currituck County for many decades Josiah was undoubtedly buried in one of many family cemeteries in Currituck County, NC.
