John was one of seven children of John & Mary [Bell] Buckingham.

On 9 Nov 1815 in Carmichaels, PA he married Elizabeth Hughes.

The couple had ten children:
1. George 1817-1844 OH, m. 1838 Elizabeth Campbell
2. Mary, 1820-1901 OR, m. 1842 Ths M Hines
3. Hiram H, 1822-1854 Or, m. 1844 Margaret Kincaid
4. John, 1824-unk, went to TX
5. Nancy 1827-1858 OR, m. 1849 Lewis R Kimes
6. Elizabeth, 1829-unk, m. 1849 Jonathan Riley
7. Mariah, 1831-1858 OR, m. Robt. Pittock
8. Hannah, 1833-1845
9. Chas. H, 1835-1895 OR, m. 1862 Adeline Landers
10. Melissa, 1837-bef 1900 OR, m. 1861 Vincent Roberts

In 1820 John's then family of 4 were living in Morgan Twp, Greene County, PA. Between 1823-24 they moved to Knox Co, OH. The family again moved between 1840-44 from OH to Gentry County, MO on the National Road.

Per a family bible John died on 6 Nov 1851 and was buried in Miller twp, Gentry County, MO. Whether this was on his farm land or in an area cemetery is unknown at this time.

In 1853 after John died his wife Elizabeth sold the land and was on the Oregon Trail moving west to join other members of the family in OR.
