Joseph was one of six children of Nicholas & Ann [Wilde] Curling. His parents and none of his siblings are known to have left England.

Joseph's siblings were:

1. Mary, b. abt 1644 d. 1718, m. Valentine Dankester, 5 ch
2. John, b. abt 1652
3. Nicholas, b. 1655 d. 1658
4. Elizabeth, b. abt 1658, m. unk Philpott
5. Sarah, b. abt 1660

On 25 Jan 1645 Joseph was baptized in St Peters, Thanet, Kent, England.

In about 1659 a young Joseph arrives in Virginia. No records have been found to show any close family came with him.

A Walter Costing deeded Joseph some land in 1665 and again in 1685. The land was adjoining the Richford Swamp in Norfolk County. It appears that Walter had no sons. In a 1716 deed Joseph Curling is referred to as "son" of Walter Costing, an appelation often meaning son-in-law or some other close, but non-familial, relationship.

More court Information (land, document witnessing & jurist) are found starting in the 1700s.

At some point Joseph marries Rebecca (surname unknown, was it Costing/Costen?). The couple are known to have had 5 children. All were born sometime after 1661, the are:

1. Nicholas, b aft 1661 - d. bef 1711
2. Anthony A. b. aft 1661 - d. 1752-53, m. Frances, 7 ch
3. Walter, b. aft 1661 - d. aft. 1718, m. Isabel
4. Joseph, b. aft 1661 - d. aft 1748, m. Isabelle Sikes, son Josiah
5. Ann, b. aft 1661 - d. aft 1718

Joseph owned property on the Elizabeth River, E of Richfod Swamp, lower Norfolk Co, VA. The family had a business making shingles.

In May 1718 he wrote his will naming his 5 children & wife as heirs. Probate began 17 Apr 1719.

Joseph's burial location is unknown, per the custom at the time it was probably in a family burial ground on the plantation.
