Leonard Frank Mitts was born on October 9, 1911 in Maple Grove, Wisconsin to parents William Frank and Eva May (White) Mitts.
In 1912 the family moved out west to Oregon and then in 1922 to Weed, California, where his dad took a job with the Southern Pacific Railroad.
He was a Veteran of WWII from January 4, 1943 to January 30, 1946. His rank was Private First Class in the U.S. Army. He was with Battery C 213th Anti Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion.
On March 1, 1947 he went to work for the Long Bell Lumber Company's powerhouse. He retired on March 31, 1974. In his retirement Leonard claimed to be a "Professional Loafer" and even had a business card to prove it.
On December 14, 1961 Leonard married the love of his life, Marie Rhea Schramm Bulis. They married at the Presbyterian Church in Reno, Nevada. They were happy together sharing many interest which included traveling, visiting family, involvement with the I.O.O.F. Lodge, and membership at the Weed Grace Presbyterian Church.
Leonard's hobbies included flying planes, hunting, fishing, tying his own flies, traveling, enjoying the great outdoors, and listening to polkas. He belonged to the Weed Benefit Club, IOOF Lodge of Yreka, and the Weed Flying Club.
In 1988 he joined and was baptized at Grace Presbyterian Church. Prior to his death, Leonard, rededicated his life to Christ. He died on November 10, 2004, at Fairchild Medical Center in Yreka, California. He was 93 years old.
Survivors includes a sister, Bernice Leporini of Citrus Heights, California; many nieces and nephews. He had no children of his own. Preceded him in death were his parents William and Eva Mitts; his wife of 28 years; brothers Kenneth Mitts of Woodland, California, and Roy Mitts of Los Molinos, California; a sister Mable Brown of sacramento, California.
Memorial service was held on November 13, 2004, at 11:00 AM at Weed Grace Presbyterian Church. Pastor Fred Wechsel officiated. Interment at Mt. Shasta Memorial Park.
