On May 10, 1861, at twenty-two years of age, Green was mustered into the 2nd Mississippi Infantry, Company B, O’Conner Rifles, one of four volunteer companies formed in Tippah County, Mississippi. He was sent to Virginia as a regimental teamster.
Green was wounded and captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and sent to DeCamp General Hospital, July 23, 1863. He died October 13, 1863 of “pyaemia” or sepsis. He was buried at Cypress Hills National Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York, in grave number 899.
