Civil War Union Army Soldier. While residing in Andersonville, Franklin County, Indiana, he enlisted in the Union Army, and was mustered in as a Private in Company K, 123rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry on March 3, 1864. He served until he died in Washington, DC on February 2, 1865.

On April 21, 1865 his wife, Martha Cates, filed for a US Army Widow's Pension (Application #89914, Certificate #171731).

He is listed in the 1860 US Census as residing at age 27 in Laurel Township, Franklin County, Indiana, with wife Martha (age 21).
