She was the daughter of Daniel Patrick Sinclair and Lillie O'Brien Sinclair, the wife of Hoyle Smith, and the mother of Daniel Patrick Smith. She loved children and animals and had a wonderful sense of humor. She made delicious pound cakes that would stay moist even after a week. She had an old dog named Pup that had a bad foot and she would fry him cornbread to eat. Along with her husband, Hoyle, she operated the Lake View Inn in Lake Waccamaw, N.C.

Waco - Mrs. Bessie Smith, 84, died Saturday. Funeral is 3 p.m. Monday at Waco Baptist Church.

Survivors are son, Daniel Smith; sister, Mrs. Ruth Dodd. Carpenter's of Cherryville is in charge.
