Civil War Union Soldier. He was mustered in as Private in Company A, 23rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 13, 1862. He served through the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, received a promoted to Corporal on December 31, 1862, served through the May 1863 Chancellorsville Campaign, and was honorably mustered out on June 27, 1863.

In 1865 he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, rising to Sergeant, and serving until 1872.

He filed for a US Army Invalid Veteran Pension on July 30, 1890 (Application #834016, Certificate #629244, DC).
