A long time resident of Lake Monticello, Sylvia was a member of Effort Baptist Church in Palmyra.
She grew up in Siler City, North Carolina. Southern California was her home for 40 years.
She served in the Women's Appointed Volunteer Emergency Services (WAVES) during World War II, after which she resumed her teaching career in North Carolina and California. She also taught United States military dependents in Japan and Germany.
Two brothers, Carlos and Robert Burns, and many nieces and nephews survive her. Her family and friends will miss Sylvia.
A private service was held in Siler City, North Carolina.
