William "Jerry" Jerome Bedford Sr., was called home on Monday, July 4, 2011, after a long battle with a variety of health issues.

He was born William Leroy Lacey, to the late DeLois Lacey, on March 10, 1942. He was adopted and raised by the late Linwood Alexander and Rosalee Bedford, where he was given the name William Jerome Bedford. He was given the nick name "Jerry" by his late sister, Arlean Baylock, whom he loved and adored.

In addition to his parents and sister, he was preceded in death by a nephew, Derrick Dean.

William met and married Shirley P. Quarterman, to whom he was a loving husband for almost 50 years.

He was reared in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, and attended Monsignor Bonner in Upper Darby, Pennsylvanis. He joined the Armed Forces and served in the Korean War. William was a devoted member and a trustee of Monumental Baptist Church. He later relocated to Charlottesville, and continued his faith by becoming a member of Chapman Grove Baptist Church. He was a gentle loving giant who was known to get his point across. Jerry was truly a comedian at heart. He was passionate about old western movies, cars, clothes, food and had a natural talent for art. Jerry lived to the fullest and appreciated the finer things in life.

He leaves behind his wife, Shirley P. Bedford; his children whom brought joy to his heart, William J. Bedford Jr. and his wife, Enid Bedford, Duane E. Bedford and his wife, Maud John-Bedford, LaTina D. Bedford-Dean and her husband, John Dean Jr., Anthony C. Bedford and his wife, April Burr-Bedford, Leticia A. Woodson and Robert F. Woodson; 18 grandchildren, Shanelle, Cleveland, Maria, Marcus, Ashley, Julie-Ann, Arrianne, Donte, Domenic, Derrick, Jahlil, Anthony, Najm, Ameem, Najah, Amir, Ryan and Ashley; five great-grandchildren, Jada, Cyann, Shombay, Aidan and Amiyah; nieces and nephews, Della, Karen, Lilly, Linwood, Jeffery, Gregory; and a host of grand-nieces and grand-nephews and friends.

A memorial service was held Sunday, July 10, 2011, at Chapman Grove Baptist Church, Eastham, with the Reverend Xavier Jackson officiating.
