Eugene Louis 'Gene' Fahrner, 77, a resident of Barnes, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth. He was born Jan. 24, 1922, in Joliet, Ill., to Dr. Walter and Grace (Huntington) Fahrner. On May 15, 1944, he was married to Mulcana "Mike" Fulton in Banana River, Fla. Gene was a first lieutenant in the Navy Air Corps and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign, Campaign and Service Victory World War II and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. Gene and Mulcana have owned Fahrner's Resort in Barnes since 1947. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and raising Golden Retrievers. While he lived in Joliet he operated a construction company. He was a charter member of the Barnes Lions Club and the American Association of Retired Persons Chapter No. 3467. He was also a member of the Barnes VFW Post 8329, the Eau Claire Lakes Conservation Club and St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Gordon. Survivors include his wife, Mike, Barnes; a son, two daughters; nine grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two children, Michelle and Eugene, two sisters and five brothers. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Gordon with Fr. Jim Powers officiating. Interment will be in the Barnes Memorial Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the Barnes VFW.
