Sgt. Jeremy Robert Wright, 31, of Shelbyville, died Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, in Afghanistan.

Born Oct. 31, 1973, in Indianapolis, he was the son of Dale L. Wright and Jacquelyn A. “Jackie” (Long) Wright Nickel.

Survivors include his father and stepmother, Linda Wright, of Flat Rock; his mother and stepfather, William Nickel of Shelbyville; one sister, Alison D. Wright of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; one stepsister, Kimberly A. Hamilton of Williamton, N.C.; one stepbrother, David R. (wife, Angela) Hamilton of Flat Rock; grandparents, Robert and Alta (Haehl) Long of Shelbyville; stepgrandparents, Ervin and Betty Keppel of Flat Rock; and fiancee, Stacey M. Lee of Indianapolis.

Sgt. Wright was a Green Beret Communications Specialist for Operation Enduring Freedom Special Forces. He had served in the U.S. Army since April of 2002.

He graduated in 1992 from Southwestern High School, where he served as class president, and was salutatorian of his class. He graduated summa cum laude from Wabash College in 1996 and was a University of Wyoming graduate school student for two years.

He was a member of National Honor Society at Southwestern High School, Zion United Church of Christ, Phi Gamma Delta Ph and Sphynx Club.

Sgt. Wright won many awards for track and cross country during high school and college, including: state track 3200-meter (two mile) event in 1992; state Mental Attitude Award; Southwestern High School cross country record in the 3200-meter event; three-year conference champs in both track and cross county; Wabash College Hall of Fame; two time All American; and 12 conference championships in college. Also, he was a member of the United States Mountain Racing Team and was Snowshoe Series Champion in Colorado.

Private family services will be observed with a public celebration of life service to be announced at a later date.

Carmony-Ewing Funeral Homes, 819 S. Harrison St., is handling the local arrangements.
