Mary Patricia Burke Martin was born in Seattle, Washington on June 10, 1910 to Dr. Caleb Ellsworth Martin II and Miriam Gertrude (Carter) Martin.

Her father's father was also Dr. Caleb Ellsworth Martin from Ontario. Her mother's father was also a doctor, Dr. Robert M. Carter of Ontario. Mary also had two uncles who were medical doctors.

She was a student nurse at Fannie C. Paddock Memorial Hospital in Tacoma when she met her future husband, Niels Daniel Svinth, who was a patient. He had lost his left arm in a lumber mill accident. They were married on February 22, 1931 in Tacoma. They had one child, Patricia Katherine Svinth, during their short marriage. Patricia was born April 10, 1932 in Tacoma.

Mary and a gentleman named James Petrie obtained a marraige license in Olympia on April 20, 1935. They had two children. Their first, Miriam Louise, died on January 25, 1936 at or soon after birth. Their second child, David Young Petrie, was born on 14 Feb 1937. He was married with two children and another on the way, when he tragically died early on the morning of December 30, 1956 from an automobile accident.

Mary and James were living together with Patricia, 7, and David, 3, on Marine View Drive in Kitsap County in April 1940.
