Another Northern New York flier crashed to his death during the past week when Aviation Cadet Curtis R. Risley, 22, son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo Risley of Hermon was killed in a mid air crash at Shaw Field, SC. Another cadet and an instructor Cadet Fray A McMillian of Charlevoix Mich and Instructor Lieut Hoyt Acker of Asheville, NC were also killed in the crash.
Mr. and Mrs. Risley were notified on Friday morning of the death of their son by a telegram from army officials at the South Carolina Air Base and the body was brought north for funeral services.
Surviving besides his parents are two brothers, Richard Risley, Hermon, an employe of the Massena Aluminum Plant, and George A. Risley of Chicago.
Aviation Cadet Risley was born in Hermon and prior to his induction into service on may 11, 1941 had been employed at Watertown by Edson A. Martin, Canton beverage distributor. He was stationed at Pine Camp until January when he went to Alabama as an aviation student. He was then transferred to the South Carolina air base where he was to have been graduated this fall as a pilot.
