Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born Waterford, Ireland, he served as a Sergeant in the 1st Madras Fusiliers, Madras Army. On September 21, 1857, Sergeant Mahoney was on duty with the Volunteer Cavalry at Mungulwar, India. Under heavy fire he aided in the capture of the Regimental Colours of the 1st Regiment Native Infantry. He was later killed in actions at Lucknow, India, on October 30, 1857. For most prestigious gallantry, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross on June 18, 1858.
