World War II Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Phalbu Village, Nepal, he served as a Rifleman in the 3rd Battalion, 2nd King Edward VII's Own Gurkha Rifles. On March 5, 1945, Rifleman Gurung was with a Company of the 2nd Gurkha Rifles during an attack on the Japanese at Tamandu, Burma. As the section then advanced, they were held down by a sniper and Rifleman Gurung being unable to fire from the lying position, stood up fully exposed to enemy fire and killed the sniper. Then without waiting for any orders, he dashed forward alone, attacked the first enemy foxhole and killed the occupents. He continued on to other enemy foxholes and cleared these with his bayonet and grenades. During his single-handed attacks he cleared five foxholes, plus crawled inside a bunker, killed the Japanese gunner and captured the machine gun. When the enemy counter-attacked, Rifleman Gurung commanded a small party inside the bunker and repelled it with heavy loss to the enemy. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was promoted Lance Naik and invested the Victoria Cross by King George VI at Buckingham Palace on the October 16, 1945. He died from asthma at age 86 in Gorkha, Nepel.
