Crimean War Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Stoker in the Royal Navy. On August 9, 1854, while on board the HMS Arrogant in the Baltic Sea, Stoker Johnstone and an officer landed on the island of Vårdö to intercept important dispatches from the Czar which were being sent. The two men spent two nights reconnoitering the island and when the dispatches arrived, they ambushed the five Russians carrying them. Two of the carriers dropped their mail bags and ran but the other three surrendered and were taken to Arrogant. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal. Stoker Johnstone while on sea duty in August, 1857, died and was s buried at sea in the St Vincent Passage, West Indies.
