Poland Prime Minister. Known for being the co-founder of Solidarność with Lech Walesa and close friend of Pope John Paul II, he served as the first Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland following the fall of communism and ending of the influence of the Soviet Union. Serving from 1989 to 1991, he later served as the United Nation’s Executive Officer in the former Yugoslavia. During his political career he was honored with several prestigious international awards including the "Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur" and "Ordine al merito della Repubblica italiana". Mazowiecki died at the age of 86.
