Army Sgt. Miller was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 293rd Infantry Regiment, 76th Brigade Combat Team, Indiana Army National Guard, Fort Wayne, Indiana. He died in Abd Allah of injuries sustained when his vehicle, a wrecker, swerved to miss an object in the road and overturned. Brian joined the Indiana Army National Guard on May 18, 1989 while still attending Pendleton Heights High School, Pendleton, Indiana. He graduated from high school in June 1990 and was a 19 year veteran of the Guard. Sgt Miller had deployments in support of Operation Vigilant Relief in Mississippi for Hurricane Katrina and to help support security operations in Atlanta, Georgia during the 1996 Olympics. On March 8, 2008, Brian arrived in Iraq where he served as a vehicle mechanic and was a truck commander for over 20 combat logistics patrols. His awards include the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal with 5 Oak leaf clusters, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, IRAQI Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award. Brian was a respected soldier, a quiet professional and never once complained. He always looked out for the younger soldiers and was never afraid to take on any task. Fellow soldiers remember how he always had a smile on his face and a positive attitude – they never heard him say anything negative. He was always talking about his wife, Becky, and two children, a daughter, 13, and son, 10.
