Television Anchor, Talk Show Host. His career began in 1934 on radio at WDGY in Minneapolis. By the 1950s he had switched to television in the Los Angeles area. Reportedly hosted the highest rated newscast in the Los Angeles area where he became a dominant and influential force in television news. Was a news anchor at KTTV 11, KTLA 5, KCOP 13, and KHJ 9 (which is now KCAL 9). An additional perquisite at KKTV and KTLA was a company provided Rolls Royce. The winner of three Emmy Awards, at one time he was the highest-paid television news anchor in Los Angeles. While working in New York City in the 1940s his rich baritone voice was described as "the greatest in radio" by Walter Winchell. His contributions to the television industry earned him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Made his last regular broadcast on his syndicated radio program, "Talk Back," on May 8, 2008, at age 93 only two months before his 94th birthday. Died from complications related to a kidney ailment.
