Leland was born March 16, 1925 in Champaign, the son of Arthur and Hattie Bickers Smith. Leland married Evelyn Murphey on October 12, 1946 in Champaign.
Surviving are his wife; daughter, Candice K. (Gerald) Allen; three grandchildren; five great grandchildren; sister, Donna Jean Bullock; brother, Donald Keith Smith; brother-in-law, Charles Rotramel; four nephews and two nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.
He retired in 1993 from Richland Community College as an audio visual coordinator. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the China Burma India Theatre receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster. He was a member of the American Legion Post #105 and a member of Prairie Avenue Christian Church serving for over 50 years as Deacon.
