Actor. Born in Vernon, Michigan, he abandoned a busy performing career on Broadway in 1951 to try his luck in feature films. He made his big screen debut in role as the President of the United States for the film "Red Planet Mars" (1952) and went on to appear in almost 150 films and television shows. His most memorable film credits include "The Bridges at Toko-Ri" (1954), "The Long Gray Line" (1955), "The Horse Soldiers" (1959), "Sergeant Rutledge" (1960), "Two Rode Together" (1961) and "The Man Who Shoot Liberty Valance". For television he was noted for being a regular on "Dragnet", "The Ford Television Theatre", "Laramie", "Harrigan and Son" and played the judge in 23 episodes of "Perry Mason". He died in Burbank, California, at the age of 70.
