Civil War Union Soldier. He joined the Union Cause after the war broke out, and was mustered in as a Private in Company A, 4th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on April 27, 1861. He served with his unit as it first manned the defenses of Washington, DC, then as it participated in the July 1861 First Bull Run Campaign. Mustered out on July 31, 1861, he was mustered in as a Private and company Farrier in Company E, 1st New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry on August 31, 1861. He then served in this role through the next three years, being present in all his regiment's engagements. When his enlistment expired, he was honorably mustered out on August 20, 1864.
