Colonel. Born Carl Gottfried in the Kingdom of Wurttemberg, Stifel changed his name to Charles after he immigrated to the Unted States. He moved to St. Louis in 1849 where he engaged in the brewing business. He met with sufficient success to build his own brewery. Stifel was appointed colonel of the 5th regiment, U.S. Reserve Corps in 1861. The day after the capture of Camp Jackson, his soldiers were attacked while marching home. Stifel and his men tried to take Confederate colonel Joseph Shelby by surprise near Lexington, Missouri. He also participated in the engagement at Blue Mills, near Independence. After returning to St. Louis, he commanded the reorganized and reenlisted regiment for the next six months before resigning from the service to return to the brewing business.
