Ignatz was a brewmaster & brewery owner. Along with his brother Joseph, he was a co-owner of an underground saloon known as Uhrig's Cave in St. Louis. The site was once the home of Dr. William Beaumont, the famous surgeon who first developed an understanding of the action of gastric juices in the stomach. The brothers enlarged an underground limestone cave from 40 feet to 210 feet & eventually tunneled all the way to their brewery site. They later installed a narrow gauge railroad for easier movement of beer from the brewery over to the underground speakeasy. The facilities were later expanded to include a theatre where it was reported that actors John Drew, Julia Marlow & Della Fox were among the stars who appeared on the stage. The brothers sold their business to a saloon keeper in 1844 who installed the first electric lights in any St. Louis entertainment spot.
