Civil War Union Soldier. He was mustered in as a Private in Company C, 3rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on May 25, 1861. He served until August 26, 1862, when he was found to have deserted. He was missing from the Union Army for over a year, then he was returned to duty on October 25, 1863. He served through the unit's subsequent campaigns, but when his techincal enlistment expired on June 23, 1864, he was detailed to make up his lost time, and was not mustered out. Instead, he was assigned with the re-enlisting men of the 3rd New Jersey to the 15th New Jersey Infantry, with whom he served until September 9, 1864. On that day he was transferred to Company D of the 2nd New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry. He then served in the cavalry until the conclusion of the war, and his eventual muster out.
