He was one of three soldiers who vanished after their combat team was ambushed May 12, 2007, about 20 miles outside of Baghdad. Five others, including an Iraqi, were killed in the ambush, subsequently claimed by al-Qaida. He was accounted for eleven days later, having been killed after his abduction. Among his military awards and decorations were the Bronze Star Medal; and Purple Heart.
CPL Joseph John Anzack Jr, CPL Micah Stephen Gifford, and CPT Matthew Charles Ferrara, all KIA during 2006-2007, were honored by the establishment of Seaside Heroes Park, located in their hometown of Torrance, CA.
He was survived by his mother, Theresa Joanne Reimer Anzack (1958-2020); his father; and his sister.
Interment on June 6, 2007.
