Death of P.R. Rains.

Peter Richard Rains was born on the 21st day of November, 1834 in Yorkshire, England, and came to America at the age of 16 years, settling at Toronto, Canada.

After a few years he moved to Orange, Illinois, at which place he was enlisted as private in the 7th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry, Company D. on the 10th days of August 1861. He was mustered out October 15th, 1864, and re-enlisted shortly afterward, being discharged at the close of the war.

In the year 1866 he was married to Martha E. Morris and to this union seven children were born, all of whom are living.

Moving from Illinois he came to Cherokee county, Kansas, residing there until the opening of Oklahoma in 1889 when he filed on a claim and followed the occupation of farmer until his second marriage which was January 3, 1903, to Mrs. Elizabeth George, who survives him.

Two years later he moved to Altoona where he resided at the time of his death, June 25th, 1908.

He was a member of the G.A.R. and Odd Fellows orders, having joined the latter order early in life at Toronto, Canada.

He has been connected with the Methodist Episcopal church for forty years, and had been devoted to his church; always at prayer meeting when able to attend, and seldom absent from the preaching services. His last service was at the Opera House last Sunday week, at which service he bore testimony to the goodness of God and his faith in Jesus Christ. And, now he has gone to join his noble innumerable company of the redeemed.

we shall cherish his memory and endeavor to emulate his noble qualities as a citizen.

The funeral was held from the Methodist Episcopal church at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 27, conducted by his pastor, Rev. G.B. Mehl, assisted by Rev. Rives, of the Congregational church, and Rev. Dunham, of the Presbyterian church. The Odd Fellow lodge and the G.A.R. Post of Altoona had charge at the grave where each of these orders with the Rebekah lodge bore testimony of their devotion for their departed brother, too, in a beautiful and touching manner. Rev. Mehl offered a word of prayer and the congregation returned to their homes with heavy hearts.

Two sons and two daughters from Oklahoma were present at their father's death and attended the funeral.
