He was born on October 16, 1903 in Loganville to Emma (Stolte) and William Baumgarten, and attended the German Lutheran School in Loganville. He married Elva A. Luetkens on September 12, 1929 in Loganville (St. John's Lutheran Church). He was a retired Loganville area farmer, a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Loganville, and a charter member of the RS@L Co-Op of Loganville.
Survivors include three sons, Marlin, Reedsburg, Kenneth, of Kenosha, Gordon of Loganville, and Doris (Mrs. Philip Fish) Sauk City; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, six brothers, Martin, North Freedom, Otto, Reedsburg, Edmund, Weyauwega, William, Loganville, Ervin, Reedsburg, and Melvin, Loganville. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Arthur and Paul and his wife Elva, in November of 1981.
