Ellis married Virginia Hays on January 25, 1951. He was a longtime grain and livestock farmer and operated Austin Farms. Ellis was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of the White County Farm Beuaru and Walnut Grove Baptist Church, a Heralds Prairie Township Cemetery Trustee and served on the NCOE School Board.
Ellis is survived by his wife, Virginia; two daughters, Sherry (Richard) Kingston of Norris City and Sandra (Ralph) Cheaney of Wadesville, IN; son, Steve Austin of Norris City; sister, Jean Beck of Bloomington, IL; brother, Leon Austin of Evansville, IN; four grandchildren, Jennifer and Brett Cheaney, Kyle Kingston and Kaitlyn Lasswell; and two great-grandchildren, Cole Kingston and Aiden Lasswell. He was preceded in death by a brother, Howard "Bud" Austin.
