William Gene Snider was born Dec. 22, 1930, in Davenport, a son of William “Everett” and Myrtle M. (Heeney) Snider. He graduated from St. Ambrose Academy in 1948 and later attended St. Ambrose College. He proudly served our country in the Air Force as a jet mechanic.
He was united in marriage to Rita N. Rice on Jan. 6, 1953, in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Davenport while they were both on military leave, Rita from the Marine Corps and Bill from the Air Force. They spent their “honeymoon” stationed at different military bases, and not seeing each other for a month following their marriage, Rita stationed in Hawaii, and Bill stationed in Washington.
Bill worked for his family's businesses during his lifetime, starting with Snider Service Center and most recently managing Snider’s Storage. He had a tremendous work ethic and even at the age of 86 was still working daily until just recently. Bill could fix anything but a broken heart.
He loved spending time with his family. He especially cherished the time with his granddaughter, Corianne, whom he taught to ride a bike in one hour, and would tape "Wheel of Fortune" and show her the replay, mystifying her by being about to solve the puzzle after seeing just a letter or two! Bill also enjoyed Notre Dame football, attending Hawkeye football games with the Lotspeich clan, was an avid reader, and loved his faithful canine companion, Tiki, whom he enjoyed taking to Vande Veer Park and going for rides.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Rita; sons and daughter-in-law, Larry and Kathy Snider, all of Davenport, and Steve Snider; granddaughter, Corianne Snider, all of Bettendorf; siblings: Everett (Joan) Snider, Texas, Don (Orlene) Snider and Ron (Rosanne) Snider, all of Davenport; a brother-in-law, Bill Coughlin, Davenport; a niece, Connie Pond, and nephew, Rich (Jody) Fontenoy and their son, Reid; and many other niece and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Teresa Snider, in 2013; his parents; and a sister, Mary Lou Coughlin. May they rest in peace.
