Civil War Union Army Officer. Born in New York circa 1837, his parents were natives of England. He was residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania when the Civil War began, and at age 26 he enlisted as a Sergeant in Company H, 2nd Pennsylvania Volunteer Heavy Artillery on December 11, 1861. On January 8, 1862 he received a commission of 1st Lieutenant in Company G, and served in that duty for the next ten months. On November 25, 1862 the commander of Company H, Captain Thomas Wilhelm, was promoted to Major of the regiment, and Joseph N. Abbey was advanced to Captain to fill the vacancy. He led the company for the next two years, as the regiment took part in the June 1864 Battle of Cold Harbor, the Siege of Petersburg, the August Battle of Weldon Railroad, and the September Battle of Chaffin's Farm. He was honorably discharged on November 2, 1865.

He married Annie Fort, and had three children: son – George P. (c.1871), son – Joseph N. Jr. (c.1873), daughter – Blanche (c.1874). They lived on 847 30th Street circa 1880. He was an Eastern passenger agent for the middle division of the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Bee Line", and was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic Post 2, the Loyalty Legion, and the Masons. He was also an original member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS Companion #00829).

On July 28, 1879 he filed for a United States Army Veterans Pension (Application #300436, Certificate #164287, no state listed). He was afflicted with disease of the spine, which saw him granted a three month vacation from it on June 1, 1884. He died of his affliction on September 1, 1884, the last day of his vacation. His funeral was held from his residence at 1936 Wallace Street.

On April 23, 1885 his wife, Annie Abbey, filed for a United States Army Widow's Pension (Application #235972, Certificate #217605, filed in Pennsylvania). She died in 1893, and was interred in Section X, Lot 283 of Laurel Hill Cemetery. He was buried in the same plot, but was removed to Section 14, Lot 301, where his grave was unmarked until 2017.
