Immigrated to U.S. in 1848 on sail boat which took 70 days of travel, from Laumpertheim, Germany. Due to the conditions in the Europe, it seems an immigrant to the United States was put in the hands of a sort of sponsor. Maria Anna Bockius was taken into the home of a woman in New York City to do house work in exchange for room and board, plus a little money. This woman spoke no German and Maria Anna spoke no English but they got along pretty well. She stayed in New York City for a short while and then said woman saw to it that Maria Anna was put on a train to Philadelphia, when her father Valentine Frank wrote her to join him in St. Louis, MO. From Philadelphia she went to Pittsburgh, PA, by stage coach and thence to St. Louis, MO via river boat.
Her father recommended that she marry Nicholas Bockius, who at that time, owned quite a bit of real estate in St. Louis. They married on August 22, 1849 at St. Mary of Victories Church in St. Louis. He was 37-years-old, with a teen-age daughter from a previous marriage, and she was 19.
During the cholera epidemic Maria Anna Bockius was somewhat of a Florence Nightingale. She went around and helped nurse the sick and when morning came she might find that a patient had passed away and she then prepared them for burial.

Funeral from residence, 1920 Nebraska avenue, Thursday, April 24, at 8:30a.m. to St. Henry's Church. Interment in SS. Peter and Paul's Cemetery. Deceased was a member of St. Ann's Sodality of St. Henry's Church.
