Major League Baseball Player, Coach. For eleven seasons (1958 and 1960 to 1969), he played as an infielder with the St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees and California Angels. Signed by the Cardinals as an amateur free agent in 1954, he made his Major League debut with St. Louis on June 29, 1958 and played in 40 games that year. After he was acquired by the Phillies, he saw his playing time increase and in 1961, he earned the starting shortstop position, as he produced a career high 98 hits in 135 games-played. In 1964, he distinguished himself as he was the recipient of a Gold Glove Award. After he was dealt to the Yankees, he remained a dependable player and served as the starting shortstop with New York during the 1967 season. He concluded his Major League career in 1969, following a stint with the Angels and continued to play another two years in the Minor Leagues. In 940 career regular season games, he compiled 505 hits, with a .234 lifetime batting average. After retiring as a player, he remained in the sport to serve at various capacities, initially as a scout with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1973. In 1980, he returned to the field and was on Dallas Green's coaching staff (1980 to 1981), as first base coach with the Phillies' team for which captured the World Championship. He went on to serve as a coach with the Chicago Cubs (1983 to 1986) and was elevated to Latin-American Scouting Supervisor with the Cubs' organization in 1988. He later became a Minor League manager with the Cubs and worked as a scout with the Detroit Tigers, before returning to the Phillies' organization to serve as a Minor League manager. He was the father of Ruben Amaro, Jr., who became a Major League player and later General Manager of the Philadelphia Phillies and coach with the Boston Red Sox.
