Marine Lance Cpl. Layton B Crass, 22, of Richmond, Ind.; assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, Calif.; died June 14 in Farah province, Afghanistan, while supporting combat operations. Also killed were Sgt. Michael Toussiant-Hyle Washington, Pfc. Dawid Pietrek and Pfc. Michael Robert Patton. Survivors include his parents of Richmond; sister, Dusty Nichole Throop and her husband Nicholas of Richmond; brother, Devin James Crass and his wife Megan Elizabeth of Twentynine Palms, Calif.; grandparents, Mary Ann and Bob Coons of Richmond, Zeb and Darlene Crass of Richmond, and Virginia Shingledecker of Des Moines, Iowa; nephew, Brenton Isaiah Throop; aunt, Randi Hunter of Omaha, Neb.; uncles, Nick Crass and Jason Crass, both of Richmond; numerous other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Wayne Shingledecker; uncle, Russell Shingledecker; special friend, Izzy Moore; friends/comrades killed in action, Sergeant Michael Washington, Lance Corporal Nathan Windsor and Lance Corporal Blake Howey.
