The first man from the town of Oswegatchie to give his life for his country was PFC Alfred C Bristol, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bristol of Heuvelton.
Private First Class Bristol was killed in action August 5 in France. He reached England in July with Infantry Company K. He received his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
The following poem was written by his grandmother, Mrs. William Bristol in his memory:
His battle is over, his blood is shed.
He is numbered now, among the dead.
He gave his life that we might have Peace.
He did his bit.
Now he rests in peace.
We know he is in a happy land,
for God reached down and took his hand.
We will miss him, each day and night,
For to him now, we cannot write.
We only hope, and we will pray,
That we will meet our boy, Someday.
