Former Fire Chief Dies At 70
Loyd E. Berger, 70, former Perry fire chief, died at 2:05 a.m. Wednesday at his home at 300 Fir Avenue.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist church, Rev. Rick Forrester, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be at Grace Hill cemetery under direction of Parker Funeral home.
Mayor Chuck Arnold announced that City Hall will be closed from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the funeral of Berger.
Berger was born April 23, 1910, at Caney, Kans., the son of George and Sarah (Hampton) Berger. He and the former Mabel Reed were married in 1929 in Caney, Kansas. She preceded her husband in death in 1966.
Berger had been a resident of the Perry community since 1935. He had been a truck driver for Smith Produce of Perry until he began work as a regular Perry fireman Jan. 3, 1951. He was named fire chief Oct. 15, 1953.
He and June Voss were married in Perry in 1967 and she survives. Berger retired as fire chief Sept 1, 1973. and became employed in maintenance work at Charles Machine Works. He had been in ill health the past 10 months.
Berger was a member of the First Baptist church of Perry, the Perry chapter of Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Rebekahs, the Masonic Lodge and the Oklahoma Firefighters association.
In addition to Mrs. Berger, of the home, survivors include five sons, Kenneth L. Berger, Tucson, Ariz.; Vernon L. Berger, Ottawa, Kan.; Glen E. Berger, Valdosta, Ga.; and Freddie L. Berger and Leslie E. Berger, both of Perry; two step-sons, Larry Voss and Garry Voss both of Perry; three daughters, Mrs. Leslie (Evelyn) Brown, Waggoner; Miss Marie Ann Berger, Perry; and Mrs. Harold (Dorothy Jean) Hawthorne, Mesa, Ariz.
Six sisters, Mrs. Ernest (Velva) Norman, Silver Springs, Nev.; Mrs. Georgia Henry and Mrs. Alice Miller, both of Sparks, Nev.; Mrs. Kenneth (Margaret) Brown, College Park, Md.; Mrs. Lyle (Edith) Pound, Atwater, Calif.; and Mrs. Don (Ruth) Tate, Yerington, Nev.; one brother, George Loran Berger, Reno, Nev.; 28 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
