One of 13 Philadelphia firefighters who died in the horrendous Friedlander Leather Remnants factory fire on December 21st and 22nd, 1910. The walls of the factory collapsed on the firefighters. The fire remains the worst death toll in Philadelphia Fire Department history.

The Philadelphia Press; Sunday, December 25, 1910, Page 7:

"McCONNELL – Suddenly, on December 22, 1910, William S., husband of Mary McConnell (nee McDonald), aged 41 years. Relatives and friends, also Captain Philip R. Schuyler Circle, No. 49, B. of A.; James G. Blaine Council, No. 766, O. of I. A.; Anti-Cobden Club, and Philadelphia Fire Department, are invited to attend the funeral services, on Sunday, at 2 P. M., at the First Mennonite Church, Diamond Street, near 5th. Interment private."

His parents were John McConnell, born in Wilmington, Delaware, and Rachel Jones, born in Philadelphia, PA.

Cause of death: He died on the way to Roosevelt Hospital (now defunct). Cause of death: "General injuries and burns accidentally received by collapse of wall at a fire at 1132 Bodine Street in performance of his duty. Said fire originating by overheated stove in drying room."
