Thelma Terry Donwerth, "Grandma Fanny," age 93, resident of Tucumcari, went to be with Jesus on March 14, 2009, while at Odyssey Hospice in Amarillo, Texas.
Thelma was born January 17, 1916, in Wheeler County, Texas to Thomas and LeNora Terry as they traveled by covered wagon from Oklahoma to New Mexico. Thelma and her oldest brother and three older sisters helped their Papa in the fields. She helped care for her four younger brothers and sisters. Thelma attended Porter School and was an avid basketball player.
Thelma married Robert Trenthem in 1932, and their first home was a half-dugout. Thelma gave birth to Gwendolyn in 1933. Thelma and Robert had a farm near San Jon, but also lived in Colorado and Arkansas. Robert was killed at San Jon in 1954. Thelma then attended Business School in Albuquerque, returning to Tucumcari to work in the Quay County Clerk's Office for J.L. Jordan in 1955 and 1956.
Thelma moved to Roswell to attend Beauty School and met Ben Donwerth whom she married in 1957. The Donwerth's raised broomcorn in San Jon for several years and adopted Linda. In 1964, Ben died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Thelma remained on the farm until marrying Leo Bennett in1970. They moved to Tucumcari where Thelma owned and operated 54 Motel. Thelma retired in 1978. Thelma and Lee divorced in 1982.
Thelma enjoyed painting with water colors, oils and pastels. She once counted her paintings to be close to 500. Thelma wanted others to enjoy her paintings and gave many to family and friends. Thelma enjoyed her renovated historic home and her antique furniture she had restored.
Thelma had been an active member of the Tucumcari Fine Arts League serving as President numerous times. Thelma was an active member of Trinity Baptist Church from 1973 to 2007. She led the Women on Mission's and enjoyed helping to raise money or gather needed supplies for the New Mexico Baptist Children's Home and an Indian Mission. In 1983, Thelma traveled for the first time overseas to England with the Southern Baptist Partnership Missions. She participated in several Mission Trips to Mexico. She taught Sunday-School, sang in the church choir and helped with the Youth. Thelma had also been active in the San Jon First Baptist Church teaching Sunday-School in the 50's and 60's, also doing local missions with the Native Americans. Thelma was active politically and felt it her duty to make a difference locally and nationally.
Thelma is survived by her daughters, Linda of the home, Tucumcari; Gwen and Paul White, Logan; two grandsons, Rod and Vickie Smith, Azle, Texas, Sid and Becky Smith, Hobbs, New Mexico; two granddaughters, LeAnn and Bob Fox, Roswell, New Mexico, Lezli and Gary Gill, Roswell, New Mexico; nine great-grandsons; eight great-granddaughters; five great-great grandsons; three great-great granddaughters. Thelma is also survived by three brothers, L.E. and Shirley Terry, Logan, Marvin and Crystel Terry, Tucumcari, and Kenneth and Betty Terry, Logan; and one sister, LaVern Waldeisen, Boulder, Colorado; and, numerous nieces and nephews.
Thelma was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and LeNora Terry; her brothers and sisters, Henry Terry, Rhoda Bone, Florence Hart, Jannie King, and Milton Terry.
Services will be Thursday, March 19, 2009, 10:00 am, at the San Jon First Baptist Church. Officiating will be Pastor Fred Caton of The Divine Connection. Pallbearers are great-grandsons and great-great grandsons. Thelma will be laid to rest at San Jon Cemetery.
Memorial donations can be made to the New Mexico Baptist Children's Home in Portales or Odyssey Hospice in Amarillo, Texas.
Thelma experienced the pioneer life thru the inventions and comforts of today. This attributed to Thelma's ability to be flexible in all situations. Thelma lived life fully and drew strength from her love of people.
