Operatic Tenor. Ernesto Baldanza first came to prominence in the American opera when he joined the Max Strakosch Italian Opera Company.

Based in New York, the Company travelled the United States bringing Opera to major American cities in the 1870s and 1880s. He later joined Her Majesty's Opera Company in London before embarking on a solo career.

His greatest claim to fame came in 1887 when, at the age of 35, he performed an extended run with renowned opera soprano Adelina Patti. It brought him world-wide acclaim. His career declined for almost 12 years, and he earned his living giving voice lessons and performing in lesser productions.

He was engaged to perform at the Oberon Music Hall in early 1900, and within days of his arrival in San Francisco, he founded the Italian Philharmonic Club. Following his final performance at San Francisco's Oberon Music Hall, he was "taken with a chill" and went home where he died within hours.

The New York Times reported that upon hearing of Baldanza's death, Enrico Caruso said, "…the world has lost one of its greatest tenors."

Cause of death: Acute Bronchitis.
