Banker, Brewer. Born in Lorraine, France, Kuhn came to St. Louis in 1859. Upon his arrival, he obtained employment with a soap manufacturer. He later joined Henry Anthony in the establishment of the Anthony & Kuhn Brewery, which was absorbed by the St. Louis brewing association in 1889. In 1891 he united with other St. Louis capitalists in the organization of the Chemical National Bank, of which he was vice president until it was consolidated with the Third National Bank. In 1894 he became president of the Ravenswood Distillery Company. Under his management, the distillery entered what promised to be a prosperous future, but the warehouse was destroyed by fire in 1897. In 1895 he joined in the organization of the Chemical Building Company, which erected St. Louis' first skyscraper. He was also vice-president of the Midland Electric Railway Company, which was the first electric street railway running into the county to tap a city line.
