I met my best friend Alia while I was an exchange student in Tepic Nayarit, Mexico during my sophmore year of high school. We attended the same school named La Eti. On my arrival home after a semester in Mexico we stayed in touch through letters and phone calls, becoming best friends / sisters. I never went back to Tepic until after Alia's passing, and she never made it here to the U.S. In the last letter I received from her, she wrote "I want to come see you and the baby, if God willing." The baby was my first child, a son who she never got to see. Not even in pictures because they arrived soon after she died.

Alia ate what is called queso de puerco. Translated cheese of pork. She ate some of that, then went to bed. Her youngest sister Aida was 12 years old at the time. Alia went in her room to go to bed. Years later Aida did say she heard a moan, but thought Alia was sleeping so she didn't go in the room. Not knowing she was choking. She threw up the queso de puerco and it blocked her nostrils causing her to choke on her own vomit. When her mom went in the next morning to wake her up for work, she pulled the covers from Alia's head, and found her passed away in her bed. She had vomit all over and in her hair. I heard that drinking can cause this, but Alia did not drink that night. In fact she stayed home with her 12 year old sister while the rest of her family went out. The cause was from the heavy grease that was in the "cheese of pork" that caused her to vomit.

I named my first daughter Noralia. Nora after my G'ma (who is also on find a grave) and Alia after my best friend; NORALIA. My 3rd daughter has Alia's middle name in her name, ZAIDE.

I eventually went back to Tepic to her burial site. Her mom is still my mom, as well as her sisters are my sisters. I miss her so much.

Mi Mejor Amiga, Te Extrano Muchisimo! Alia passed in the wee morning after her 19th birthday from asphyxiation. Alia is buried in Tepic Nayarit, Mexico. She was the 2nd out of 5 girls. There is Alicia, Alia, America, Lucy and Aida.
