H. Elgin Coffman Howard Elgin Coffman of Milton-Freewater, Oregon passed away Friday, February 23, 2007 at the Stateline Retirement Center in Milton-Freewater at the age of 93 years. No services are planned. Internment will be in the Athena Cemetery. A private, family gathering will follow in June.

Elgin was the oldest of four brothers and three sisters and lived in the Milton-Freewater and Athena area his entire life. He was born December 29, 1913 to Floyd Tracy Coffman and Mildred May Shields Coffman on his family's homestead on Steens Road east of Milton.

Elgin graduated from McLoughlin High School in 1932 and married Alpha Aichele on January 2, 1935. They worked for George Winn for two years and then moved to Athena to work for Homer I. Watts and farmed wheat and peas. They started farming on their own in 1952, lived in a ranch house 5 miles outside of Athena, and actively farmed there for many years until they retired to live in Athena in the 1980s.

They had two daughters, Jane Laurine Coffman Hoag, formerly of Seattle, and Jo Ann Coffman Culbertson Ryan, formerly of Athena. Their grandson Howard eventually moved into the Coffman homestead and took over the active farming duties, but Elgin continued to feed the cattle and assist with other farming duties until 2006.

Elgin will be dearly remembered by his family as a quiet, hardworking farmer and honest man with a kind, generous spirit and caring heart. He was a generous man of strong character and had a life-long interest in history. He enjoyed visiting family and having coffee with friends, long road trips, following current events, and talking about machinery, as well as local and world history.

He is survived by his siblings: Robert (Bernice) Coffman of San Diego, Thomas (Jean) Coffman of Myrtle Point, Ore., Norma Coe of Walla Walla, and Joseph (Leslieanne) Coffman of Wheatland, Colo. He is survived by his grandchildren: Samara Hoag (Jeanne Dorn) of Seattle, Corolla Hoag (Kevin Horstman) of Tucson, Ariz., Calyx Elgin (Barbara) Hoag of Bellingham, Wash., Howard Culbertson (Linda) of Milton-Freewater, Rebecca Jo (Charles) Olmstead of Walla Walla, and Margaret Ann (John) Pellham of Walla Walla. He is survived by his great-grandchildren: Molly Kate Culbertson; Ann, April and Sage Hoag; Jesse III, Rachel, Aaron, and Daniel Campos and Carolyn Grace Olmstead; Cody, Zachary, Cenira, Brady, Devon, and Zoeie Pellham; and Tiffany Garcia and Courtney Brody.

Elgin was preceded in death by wife Alpha in 1990, daughters Jo Ann Ryan in 1994 and Jane Coffman Hoag in 2001, his sisters Margaret Lieuallen of Athena in 1998 and Catherine Swanson of Walla Walla in 2002.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Christian Aid, P.O. Box 56, Walla Walla, 9932 or to the charity of your choice.
