Gabriel was the Director of Community Outreach for U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and respected by her constituents for his valuable day-to-day assistance with their concerns. He had been on her staff since her first campaign in 2006. He was an avid athlete and engaged to be married to Kelly O'Brien a nurse at Tucson Medical Center. He was shot by a mentally ill young man at a public "Congress on your Corner" event at a northwest Tucson shopping center. Six people died including: Zimmerman, chief judge of the United States District Court for the District of Arizona John Roll; nine-year old Christina Taylor Green; Dorothy Morris, 76; Dorwin Stoddard, 76; and Phyllis Schneck, 79.

ZIMMERMAN, Gabriel "Gabe" died on January 8, 2011. He was a Tucson native, born here in 1980. He graduated from University High School, received a bachelor's degree in sociology from University of California at Santa Cruz, and a Master's Degree in Social Work from Arizona State University's Tucson program. He worked at Arizona's Children Association, then for 5 years for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, ending his career as Community Outreach Director. Gabe was engaged to be married to Kelly O'Brien, a Yuma native who now lives in Tucson.

He is survived by his mother, Emily Nottingham; father, Ross Zimmerman and step-mother Pamela Golden; brother, Ben Zimmerman; grandparents, Jim and Rachel Zimmerman, and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was a generous, happy and caring person, loved by many in the community. In lieu of flowers, people may donate to Child and Family Resources, or to a scholarship fund that has been established in his name by the ASU School of Social Work. Private Family Services will be held.
