In 1862 during The Civil War, Orlando fought bravely in Company A of New Hampshire's 12th Voluntary Regiment, "The Mountaineers".
along with his brother, Julius.

Wounded in the head by a musket ball at Chancellorsville.
Orlando was present at Ford's Theatre when President Abraham Lincoln was shot on April 14, 1865 & even later guarded over the conspirators at the Old Arsenal Penitentary.

Second marriage to Harriett M (Dearborn) Buxton on January 22, 1870.
