Kurt is the son of Max and Virginia Ford of Newton, KS. On September 12, 1992, he married Jill (Preston) in Newton. They have two children, Preston and Adam. Upon their recent relocation to Newton, KS, Kurt and his family have attended the Columbus Church of Christ. Throughout his lifetime Kurt touched many lives, both young and old. Law enforcement was always of great interest to Kurt. Officer training was a very important detail of his career. He also spent much of his time outside of the Law Enforcement with his children and other family members. Kurt's career led him to many different areas. He was Police Chief in Hesston for some time, before moving to Colorado. Upon his return to Newton, Kansas, he was the Deputy Sheriff for Harvey County. Kurt was involved with youth programs such as D.A.R.E. and was a very kind-hearted, caring officer. He held memberships in many organizations throughout his career, including the Kansas Peace Officer Association, International Chief of Police, Kansas Association Chief of Police, Kansas Sheriff's Association, National Sheriff's Association, National Rifle Association, Harvey County Emergency Rescue Team, Douglas County SWAT, and the Douglas County Shoot Team.

Kurt Ford was killed by Gregory A. Moore after a standoff with police at Moores' south Newton home. Hesston police detective Chris Eilert was wounded. Moore got life without parole.
