Middleton never married, he was referred to as the "Old Man" this was more likely because he was a bachelor. He was a peddler by trade and sold eggs, chickens and other things and traveled around a great deal, he was remembered as being bald in his older years, he died at the home of his nephew, Martin Van Buren Armstrong, the son of his brother Robert, Martin and Middleton died almost two months apart, Middleton is buried next to his unmarried sister, and their parents.

Milton and Robert Armstrong had a lawsuit against Middleton, over the estate of their father John, Middleton received property from his father in his will, with the agreement that Middleton take care of his parents, and this he did not do for some reason, as his parents both lived with Middleton's sisters, and their families. The case was in favor of Milton and Robert and it cost them 20 dollars in court costs.
